Throwback Thursday: Reasons Why Reggie Rockstone Is Called The Father Of Hiplife

Reggie Rockstone known in real life as Reginald Yaw Asante Osei is a rapper, entrepreneur and a producer. Born in the U.K on April 11th, 1964 to fashion designer Ricky "Ricci" Ossei (Saint Ossei), he had his early life in Kumasi and Accra, Ghana. His first 'fifteen minutes of fame' came as a dancer in Accra, Ghana in the early 80's. His second chance of fame came in 1992-93 as member of one of the top rap groups from London, England. Rockstone attached himself to the Hip Hop movement called the PLZ (Parables, Linguistics and Zlang) with Fredi Funkstone, Jay  (both from West Africa)and DJ Pogo of the U.K. Hit songs from PLZ included "If it Ain’t PLZ" and an EP entitled "Build a Wall Around Your Dreams" released on an independent label called "Go For the Juggler."


 Reggie returned home when music was no longer lucrative in London. On his return, he infused the music he knew with an African vibe and a touch of Akan Twi. In the early 1997, he released a groundbreaking album titled Makaa Maka, which had bangers such as Sweetie Sweetie, Tsoo Boi, Nightlife in Accra and the hit song, Agoo. The album was executively produced by his father, Ricky Osei.


 After Makaa Maka, he grew in the industry and dropped back to back records like Me Na Me Kae (I Was The One Who Said It) in 1999, Me Ka (I Will Say It) in 2000, Last show in 2004, and Reggiestration in 2010.


Signed to Kassa records, he pioneered the Hiplife art form and has played an important role in the development of this uniquely African genre in Ghana. He raps in Akan Twi and English.  In 2004, Rockstone won the Kora Award for the best African video and he performed in front of a 50,000-person crowd in Ghana, together with Shaggy. His associate musicians include Beenie Man, Wyclef Jean, Kwaku-T, PLZ, Sway, 2face Idibia, Efya, Sena, Wanlov, M.anifest, D-Black, Jayso, EL, Mensa, and Kwaw Kese among others.


Numerous lives have been touched as he has coached and managed many young talents. Reggie joined Ghanaian hiplife group VVIP following the exit of Promzy in 2014 and has been an active member till date. He has been living in Ghana since he pioneered the Hip-Life movement in 1994 till today. Now you know why Rockstone is recognized and nicknamed as the Godfather of Hiplife Music in Ghana
